Cures for Chilblains

Chilblains are a type of skin inflammation that cause red patchesd, and soreness and itchiness. Chilblains may occur on your toes or fingers and less often on your face and nose. Though they can be painful, they do not cause permanent damage.
  1. Significance

    • Chilblains are usually caused when your body has an abnormal reaction of cold temperatures or when an area of your body (particularly your toes) has been subjected to constant pressure. Chilblains are more likely to occur if you suffer from poor circulation, inadequate diet or experience allergic reactions to cold temperatures.

    Identification

    • Symptoms of chilblains include redness, sore and itchy patches on the skin, a burning sensation on the skin and dry, cracked skin on and around the affected area. Sometimes when the skin cracks it may become infected.

    Prevention/Solution

    • You can improve your blood circulation and thus help prevent or cure chilblains by ensure that your daily diet is rich in calcium and silica. These minerals can be found in almonds, sesame seeds, spinach, figs, cabbage and oats. They may also be taken in the form of a daily dietary supplement.

    Cure

    • Topical applications such as ointments made with arnica can help cure chilblains as can topical herbal oils, such as lavender oil, rosemary oil and peppermint oil.

    Warning

    • If you have a severe case of chilblains or over-the-counter remedies are ineffective at treating your symptoms, you should seek advice from your physician, who may prescribe local antibiotics or oral medications such as vasodilators--used to expand your blood vessels.
