Liver Function Improvement

Your liver is a wonderful organ. It helps rid your body of toxins, cleanses the blood and aids in the digestion of food. Because proper liver function is so vital to long-term health, keeping it functioning properly is critical. There are a number of things you can do to improve the function of your liver and increase your ability to stay healthy.
  1. Don't watch the clock

    • Too often, we get set into patterns of eating at certain times of the day, whether we're hungry or not. Eating when you're not hungry creates excessive wear on the liver and makes it work more throughout the day. Cutting back on eating when your body's not asking for food will help improve overall liver function.

    Hydrate

    • If you drink only when you're dying of thirst or at mealtime, you're doing your liver a disservice. Water helps clean toxins and bacteria from the liver. You should drink water throughout the day, whether it's in small sips or regular infusions of 12 ounces every couple of hours.

    Limit sugar intake

    • The liver converts sugars to fats and sends them to the places in your body where you store fat. If that's not reason enough to take care of your liver, consider that ingesting too much sugar raises the triglyceride levels in your blood and can lead to cardiovascular problems. Whatever you do, don't substitute artificial sweeteners for the real thing. Artificial sweeteners can damage the liver.

    Bacterial Intake

    • Certain foods or food that has been stored improperly can contain bacteria that can impede your liver's ability to rid the body of toxins. Salmonella, for example, can cause serious illness and liver damage.
