Deprenyl Side Effects

Deprenyl is the brand name for the generic drug selegiline. It is prescribed in combination therapy to treat Parkinson's symptoms. Classified as an antidyskinetic, it helps with muscle control and reduces stiffness. As with all prescription medications, side effects may occur while using Deprenyl.
  1. Most Common Side Effects

    • The most common side effects reported include abdominal pain, dizziness, loss of consciousness, dryness of the mouth, nausea, insomnia and vomiting. Most common side effects are normal and adjustment periods are required. If side effects persist, however, contact a health care professional.

    Less Common Side Effects

    • Less common side effects may include anxiety, back pain, leg pain, blurred vision, constipation, diarrhea, drowsiness, headache, frequent urination, loss of appetite and unusual weight loss. Contact a physician if side effects seem abnormal.

    Higher Dosage Side Effects

    • At dosages of 10 mg or more, side effects may include grinding, gnashing and clenching of teeth. Muscle spasms may also occur.

    Precautions

    • If dosage prescribed is 10 mg or more, avoid foods that contain high tyramine content such as cheese, fava, smoked meat, pickled meat, bologna, pepperoni, salami, sauerkraut, and overripe fruit. Avoid consuming alcoholic beverages, caffeinated drinks and medications not approved by your physician.

    Warnings

    • Some side effects of Deprenyl can be serious, even life-threatening. Get immediate medical attention if unusual hypertension, chest pain, enlarged pupils, tachycardia (rapid heart beat), bradycardia (slow heart beat), severe headache, severe nausea, severe vomiting or stiff neck occur.
