Ways to Treat Cold Sores

Cold sores, or fever blisters, are causes by the herpes virus HSV-1. They are painful red sores that occur usually on the mouth. People often get cold sores by sharing food and kissing. Once you get the herpes virus that causes cold sores, it remains in your body forever and hides in the nerve cells along the ear. Cold sores will clear up within seven to 10 days.
  1. Ice

    • For temporary pain relief apply ice to the cold sore. Wrap ice in a damp washcloth and apply to the cold sore for 10 to 15 minutes three to four times a day or whenever possible.

    Avoid Spicy/Salty Foods

    • Pain associated with cold sores is caused by raw nerves within the sore. Avoid foods that are spicy or salty. These foods will irritate the raw nerves and cause a burning and painful sensation.
