Moxypen Side Effects

Moxypen contains an antibiotic called amoxycillin trihydrate that is used to treat infections within the body. Approved for children and adults aged 10 and over, Moxypen is generally effective and produces minimal side effects in patients.

  1. What Is Moxypen?

    • Moxypen is an antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It is an amoxycillin, a member of the penicillin family of naturally-derived antibiotics. It is only effective against bacterial infections and will not work against viral infections. It comes in pill and syrup forms.

    Moxypen Uses

    • Moxypen is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including, but not limited to: infections of the sinuses, upper and lower respiratory tracts, urinary tract, ear and pharynx, pneumonia, bronchitis, meningitis, infections caused by food-borne pathogens, and various soft-tissue infections.

      It is also used for miscellaneous infections as determined by your doctor.

    Minor Side Effects Associated With Moxypen

    • Some people experience yeast infections following or during the use of Moxypen. These secondary infections can be treated with anti-fungal medications as directed by a physician.

      Abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting and sensitivity to light may occur. These are usually not bothersome enough to stop taking Moxypen.

      In rare instances, patients have reported auditory and visual hallucinations while taking Moxypen. If you should experience these, consult your physician.

    Major Side Effects of Moxypen

    • The most dangerous side effect of Moxypen is a risk of anaphylactic shock in allergic individuals.

      If breathing should become labored, or seizures or loss of consciousness should occur while taking Moxypen, seek emergency help immediately. These are signs of anaphylactic shock, which is a serious allergic response that can cause death if not treated immediately.

      Other serious side effects include liver and kidney impairment. If the whites of your eyes or your skin should become yellow, or your urine dark, consult your physician immediately. This is a sign that your body is not properly processing Moxypen, and it must be addressed in a timely manor.

    Contraindications

    • Patients who are allergic to penicillin or cephalosporins must not take Moxypen because of an increased risk of severe allergic reaction or anaphylaxis.

      Patients being treated for mononucleosis are at high risk of developing skin rashes while being administered Moxypen, so they must be carefully monitored while taking it.

      As with all antibiotic medications, the effectiveness of hormonal birth control is decreased. While taking Moxypen, be sure to use a backup method of birth control such as condoms to prevent unintended pregnancy.
