Malerone Side Effects

Malarone is a prescription medication that is used for the treatment of the disease malaria. The medicine functions to prevent a specific type of parasitic infection that can occur when traveling to areas that harbor malaria (as well as resistant malaria). It is classified as being an antimalarial. As with any type of medicine, there are some possible side effects that could occur due to Malarone use.
  1. Common Side Effects

    • There are various common side effects that could occur due to taking Malarone. They include weakness, nausea, throwing up, diarrhea, coughing, dizziness, feeling lightheaded, appetite loss, stomachache, headache and mouth sores.These side effects are usually considered to be minor, as they tend to go away once the body gets used to the medicine. Seek medical attention if they do not go away or get worse.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Serious side effects are rare, but canr result from use of Malarone. Seek emergency medical attention if they occur. Some potentially dangerous side effects are darker colored urine, chills, fever, lingering or extreme throwing up, shortness of breath, abnormal weakness or exhaustion, yellowing of the eyes or of the skin, weight loss, ringing within the ears, convulsions, backache, muscle pain, swollen, peeling, red, or blistering skin, mental or mood changes and pale stools.

    Allergic Reactions

    • Allergic reactions are also considered to be serious side effects of Malarone. Some signs of allergic reaction to Malarone are chest or throat tightness, abnormal hoarseness, swelling of the tongue, lips, face, or mouth, problems with breathing, skin rash, itchiness and breaking out into hives. Seek immediate medical attention if an allergic reaction occurs.

    Sunlight Sensitivity

    • One rare, but possible, side effect of taking Malarone is increased sensitivity to sunlight. If you burn more easily than usual, notify your doctor.

    Drug Interactions

    • Drug interactions are possible when more than one medicine is taken at the same time. These interactions can lead to decreased or increased effectiveness of one or more of the drugs that are involved, as well as possibly some negative side effects. Before starting Malarone, notify your physician of all medications you might be taking, particularly blood thinners (such as warfarin), metoclopramide, tetracycline, rifabutin and rifampin.
