Types of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is cancer that is in the lymphatic system of the body. The lymphatic system refers to the lymph nodes, fluid that contains cells called lymphocytes and vessels that carry the fluid through the body. The types of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma are classified by the cell type and the pattern of growth.
  1. Diffuse Large B-Cell

    • Diffuse Large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) starts in the internal lymph nodes, such as chest or abdomen. It can also be in the armpit or neck and grows into a mass quickly. This type of lymphoma may also be found in the brain, spine, intestines or bone.

    Follicular

    • This type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is called follicular because of the circular growth pattern of the cells in the lymph nodes. Follicular lymphoma can be found anywhere in the body as well as in the bone marrow. They usually grow slowly and are difficult to get rid of completely.

    Hairy Cell

    • Hairy cell leukemia (HCL) is a rare type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The lymphoma cells get their name from the "hairy" appearance due to the projections sticking out from the cell. It circulates in the blood and can affect the bone marrow and spleen.

    Burkitt

    • Burkitt is a type of lymphona that grows very quickly and can be found in the abdomen. The tumor that forms is large and may spread to the brain or into the spinal fluid. Burkitt lymphoma can also begin in other organs, ovaries or testes.

    Lymphoplasmacytic

    • This uncommon type of lymphoma forms small cells in lymph nodes, bone marrow and spleen. Lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma produces immunoglobulin M (IgM), which is an antibody in the blood. This type of lymphoma antibody circulates in the blood in large amounts. It causes blood to thicken and blood flow to decrease, leading to poor circulation.

    Peripheral T-cell

    • The different types of this lymphoma are cutaneous T-cell lymphomas which may start in the skin. Angioimmunoblastic T-cell and appears in the lymph nodes and may also appear in the spleen or liver. It is a fast-growing type of lymphoma. Extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma typically occurs in the nose and upper throat. It may occur in the digestive tract or skin. Subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma begins deep in the skin and forms nodules.
