Diet for Pancreatitis

Pancreatitis is a condition in which the pancreas, a gland located behind the stomach, becomes inflamed. The inflammation causes nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever and rapid pulse. A poor diet can make the symptoms worse, so a specific diet should be followed. Your doctor also may want to test for food allergies, because these also can cause inflammation.
  1. Low Fat

    • To keep pancreatitis under control, your diet should consist of no more than 30 percent fat. Processed or fried foods should be avoided at all costs; they are high in saturated and trans fats. When you cook at home, use vegetable or olive oil rather than margarine or butter.

    Protein

    • You can help control the inflammation of the pancreas by including enough lean protein in your diet. Chicken, fish, beans and soy products, such as tofu, are great choices. Red meat and dairy products, such as milk, cheese, eggs and ice cream, should be avoided.

    Carbohydrates

    • Dark leafy greens, such as spinach and kale, are high in iron and B vitamins and are great for people with pancreatitis. Other great choices are fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants, such as squash, bell peppers, blueberries, tomatoes and cherries. Include lots of whole grains in your diet and avoid white bread, white sugar and white pasta, which are refined and may cause inflammation.

    Foods to Avoid

    • There are a lot of foods that can cause inflammation and your pancreas to become overworked. If you have pancreatitis, avoid alcohol, caffeine and tobacco because they all stimulate the pancreas. Spicy foods and any foods known to cause gas also should be avoided.
