Types of Human Papilloma Virus

Human papillomaviruses (HPV) cause abnormal growths to form on the body. Ordinarily, HPV is harmless; however, it can sometimes lead to cervical cancer in women. Treatments vary depending on what type of infection results.
  1. Genital Warts

    • HPV can cause genital warts. Genital warts are usually painless and can appear on both males and females. Some HPV lesions in females can cause precancerous growths. In severe cases, HPV can lead to cervical cancer.

    Mouth and Respiratory HPV

    • HPV can cause warts on the soft palate and tongue in the mouth. It can also cause lesions to form on the larynx and in the nose.

    Common Skin Warts

    • HPV causes common warts that appear on the hands. Hand warts are most common in children.

    Plantar Warts

    • Plantar warts appear on the feet as hard and grainy-feeling growths. This type of wart may cause pain.

    Flat Warts

    • HPV also may cause flat warts, which appear as dark-colored lesions on the skin. They most commonly appear on the elbows, wrists, hands, knees, neck and face.
