Signs of MRSA in Children
MRSA is a potentially dangerous staph infection that often resists antibiotic treatment. It can occur when the staph bacteria enters the body through an abrasion or cut on the skin's surface. Children in daycare centers are especially at risk of developing a MRSA infection as a result of touching infected toys or other items.-
Skin Symptoms
-
MRSA typically begins as a red, swollen area of skin. The area will be painful to the touch and ooze pus. The area may also feel warm to the touch.
Fever
-
Children with a MRSA infection often have a fever.
Other Symptoms
-
Serious MRSA infections may cause the affected individual to have chills, headaches and muscle aches. Also, fatigue and shortness of breath may occur. In addition, a rash may develop.
Diagnosis
-
A MRSA infection can be diagnosed with a blood test or skin sample.
Treatment
-
MRSA infections that only affect the skin are generally treated by draining the sore. More serious infections will be treated with strong antibiotics.
