How to Clean Your Tonsils

Tonsil stones, also known as tonsilliths, are green, grey or white calcified masses that form in the pits of your tonsils. Tonsilliths are not harmful, but they do cause bad breath and may create discomfort in the back of the throat. If you have tonsillitis, you will also need to carefully clean your tonsils to prevent further infection, and it is important that you know the correct way to do it.

Dip a cotton swab in hydrogen peroxide. Gently dab the hydrogen peroxide on problem areas on your tonsils. You may feel a bubbling sensation, which is the hydrogen oxygenating the bacteria in the mouth.

Gargle with a mouthwash, such as Listerine, twice a day. Pay specific attention to the back of your throat by throwing your head back and gargling for at least 30 seconds. Spit and rinse your mouth thoroughly with water.

Gargle with salt water. Salt water will restore the pH of your mouth and it also has an antiseptic quality. Swish salt water in your mouth for one minute, paying specific attention to your tonsils by gargling with your head back.
