  Know that multiple myeloma is not curable as of 2009. There are treatments that prolong life and some of the treatments and trials may have the potential to one day lead to a cure.

  Realize that treatment is determined by a plethora of factors including results of laboratory work and physical examinations, age, symptoms, complications, previous treatments, classification of the disease and progression.

  Know that the goal of treatment is to decrease pain, progression and eventual organ damage. Treatments are an attempt to keep the disease in remission for as long as possible and increase quality of life while managing the side effects of the treatment.

  Realize that the disease has an active status and an inactive status. Inactive patients are observed until symptoms occur or the disease progresses. When the disease is active, patients are treated at some level depending on all the factors present.
