Facts on Blood-borne Pathogens

Blood-borne pathogens can be deadly, depending on the type, if you come in close contact with the blood. Taking precautions, such as using latex gloves, is the best way to stay safe when you are in close contact with these pathogens. The three main blood-borne pathogens are listed below, along with a brief description of each.
  1. Types

    • Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV/AIDS are life-threatening blood-borne pathogens.

    Hepatitis B

    • Hepatitis B is a virus that can attack the liver. It is a virus that may stay in your system for life.

    Hepatitis C

    • This is a liver disease that is spread by coming in contact with the blood of a person who has the disease.

    HIV/AIDS

    • This is a human immunodeficiency virus that spreads through contact with an infected person's blood. If an infected person's blood comes in contact with your eyes, nose or mouth, you can also contract the disease.

    Protection

    • Sterilization and disinfectants should be used in areas where the infected person may be staying. If you are in contact with an infected person's blood, take precautions, such as wearing gloves and masks, to be sure not to become infected yourself.
