What Is Plantar Fasciitis?
Plantar fasciitis is a common cause of heel pain. It occurs when the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes, becomes inflamed. This can cause pain and stiffness in the heel and arch of the foot.
Plantar fasciitis is most common in people who are middle-aged or older, overweight or obese, or who have jobs that require them to stand or walk for long periods of time. It can also be caused by wearing shoes that do not provide adequate support.
Symptoms of plantar fasciitis can include:
- Heel pain that is worse in the morning or after prolonged standing or walking
- Stiffness in the heel and arch of the foot
- Pain that worsens with activity and improves with rest
Treatment for plantar fasciitis typically involves rest, ice, elevation, and stretching exercises. In some cases, over-the-counter pain relievers or custom orthotics may be helpful. If these measures do not relieve the pain, surgery may be necessary.
Preventing plantar fasciitis is possible by:
- Maintaining a healthy weight
- Wearing shoes that provide good support
- Avoiding activities that put strain on the feet
- Stretching the feet regularly
