Treatments for Pinworms in Children
A pinworm, also known as a thread worm or a seatworm, is an intestinal parasite that is commonly found in children. It is estimated that there are 40 million cases in the United States alone and they are most commonly found in school children from between five to ten years old. If your child has pinworms then there are several treatments that can be used.-
Mebendazole (MBZ)
-
Mebendazole is a benzimidazole drug used to treat infestations by parasites such as pinworms, roundworms, tapeworms, hookworms, and whipworms. This drug is also known as Vermox, Ovex, Antiox, and Pripsen. To treat pinworms, this chewable tablet should be taken in 100 mg doses two times about two weeks apart. The purpose of the first dosage is to kill both adult and immature pinworms. The second dose kills the pinworm eggs. Mebendazole should not be taken by children younger than two years, pregnant women and breast-feeding women unless prescribed by a doctor.
Albendazole (Albenza)
-
Albendazole, commonly known as Albenza, Eskazole and Andazole, can be used for the treatment of several worm infestations. This drug is available by prescription only, and it comes in a tablet form. The dosage of this drug must be determined by a doctor. There are usually two doses required two weeks apart. Albendazole kills both immature worms and adult pinworms, and it is generally used in cases of pinworm infections that cannot be treated by other medications or when a person develops side effects from other pinworm medications. This drug is not recommended for pregnant women, breast-feeding women or those with liver disease or poorly functioning livers.
Pyrantel Pamoate
-
Pyrantel Pamoate is the only drug for pinworm treatment that is available without a doctor's prescription. This drug comes as a chewable pill or liquid. The dosage for this pinworm treatment depends on the weight of the person. A measuring cup and weight chart is sometimes included in the box; if a measuring cup and a weigh chart are not included, ask a pharmacist or doctor to determine the proper dosage. This drug is usually taken twice about two weeks apart. The first dose kills adult and immature pinworms, while the second dose eliminates pinworm eggs and hatchlings. Though this drug can be used without a doctor's prescription, children under two years of age, pregnant women and breast-feeding women, should only take this drug when advised by a doctor.
Prevention
-
Proper hygiene is the most effective way to prevent pinworm infection. Pinworms usually infect children, so keeping them clean by cutting their fingernails, and encouraging them to wash their hands regularly after a bowel movement and before eating is important. It is also important to make sure that children change their underwear daily and that their bedding is washed at least once a week.
