1
Limit distractions. Make sure that loud noises such as television sets, noisy children and radios will not be obstacles for the person with Parkinson's disease to overcome when speaking.
-
2
Position yourself face-to-face with the person you want to communicate with. It is important that each member of the conversation can clearly see the facial expressions of the other person.
-
3
Ask simple questions that have yes or no answers. Don't be afraid to be creative though, as closed questions can sometimes make communication impossible even for those who are healthy.
-
4
Encourage the person with Parkinson's disease to speak slowly and carefully. Make sure she does not feel pressured to answer questions too quickly, as this anxiety can hinder communication.
-
5
Request that the person with Parkinson's disease repeats himself if you don't understand what he said. Effective communication requires clarification if there is a question about what was said. A conservation with someone with Parkinson's disease should be no different.
