Are leprosy cases on the increase or decrease worldwide?

The number of new leprosy cases diagnosed each year has been steadily decreasing since the 1980s and has fallen by over 90%. In 2020, there were about 208,457 new cases reported globally, with the majority of cases in India, Brazil, Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Ethiopia.
