Did syphilis have a known cure?

In the early stages, syphilis was effectively treated with mercury preparations, but these were less effective in the advanced stages of the disease, which developed months or years after infection in some, but not all, untreated cases. Mercury itself has significant toxic effects, and alternative remedies were sought.
