Why does g6pd deficiency prevent malaria?

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency does not prevent malaria. In fact, people with G6PD deficiency are more susceptible to severe malaria. G6PD is an enzyme that helps red blood cells protect themselves from oxidative stress. When red blood cells are infected with malaria parasites, they produce large amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that can damage the cells. G6PD deficiency makes red blood cells more susceptible to this damage, leading to increased disease severity in people with G6PD deficiency.
