How do you treat Pharyngitis and Tonsilitis?

Pharyngitis and tonsillitis are infections of the throat (pharynx) and tonsils, respectively. They are usually caused by viruses, and less often by bacteria. Treatment for pharyngitis and tonsillitis depends on the cause of the infection.

Viral pharyngitis

Viral pharyngitis, also known as the common cold, is the most common type of sore throat. It is caused by a variety of viruses, including rhinovirus, influenza virus, and parainfluenza virus. Viral pharyngitis usually resolves on its own within 7-10 days. Treatment is aimed at relieving symptoms.

Treatment for viral pharyngitis may include:

- Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen

- Throat lozenges or sprays

- Warm liquids, such as tea or soup

- Rest

Bacterial pharyngitis

Bacterial pharyngitis, also known as strep throat, is caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococcus). Strep throat is more common in children than adults. Symptoms of strep throat include a sore throat, fever, headache, and body aches.

Treatment for bacterial pharyngitis includes:

- Antibiotics, such as penicillin or amoxicillin

- Pain relievers

- Rest

Tonsillitis

Tonsillitis is an infection of the tonsils, which are two small glands located at the back of the throat. Tonsillitis can be caused by viruses or bacteria. Symptoms of tonsillitis include a sore throat, difficulty swallowing, fever, and swollen tonsils.

Treatment for tonsillitis depends on the cause of the infection. Treatment for viral tonsillitis is the same as treatment for viral pharyngitis. Treatment for bacterial tonsillitis includes antibiotics.

In some cases, tonsillectomy (surgical removal of the tonsils) may be necessary to treat chronic tonsillitis.

Prevention

There is no sure way to prevent pharyngitis and tonsillitis. However, you can reduce your risk of infection by:

- Washing your hands frequently

- Avoiding close contact with people who are sick

- Getting enough rest

- Eating a healthy diet

- Quitting smoking
