What does truvada treat?

Truvada (emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) is a medication that is used to prevent and treat HIV infection in adults and adolescents who weigh at least 35 kilograms (77 pounds). It is a combination of two antiretroviral drugs, emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, that work together to stop HIV from multiplying in the body. Truvada is taken orally, once a day, with or without food. It can be used as part of a combination therapy regimen, along with other antiretroviral drugs, to treat HIV infection. Truvada is also approved for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), to help prevent HIV infection in people who are at high risk of getting HIV, such as those who have unprotected sex or share needles.
