Mortality rate of mad cow disease?
The mortality rate of mad cow disease, also known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), is close to 100%. BSE is a progressive, fatal neurodegenerative disorder that affects cattle. The disease is caused by a misfolded protein called a prion, which accumulates in the brain and spinal cord, leading to a variety of neurological symptoms and ultimately death.
BSE was first identified in the United Kingdom in 1986, and it quickly spread to other countries around the world. However, due to strict control measures and improved farming practices, the number of BSE cases has declined significantly in recent years.
In humans, BSE can cause a similar disease called variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD). vCJD is also fatal, and it has a mortality rate of approximately 100%. However, vCJD is very rare, and it is estimated that only about 200 cases have occurred worldwide.
