What body system does krabbes disease affect?
Krabbes disease, also known as globoid cell leukodystrophy (GLD), is a rare inherited disorder that affects the nervous system. It is caused by a deficiency of the enzyme galactocerebrosidase (GALC), which is responsible for breaking down a fatty substance called galactocerebroside in the brain. The accumulation of galactocerebroside leads to the destruction of the myelin sheath, the protective covering that surrounds nerve cells, and the subsequent degeneration of nerve cells in the brain.
