Levels of Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is a treatment used to combat the effects of cancer through radiation. There are several types of treatment, each varying in degrees of strength and results.
  1. Combined Modality Chemotherapy

    • Using a combination of drugs and radiation, combined modality chemotherapy is the most common treatment for cancer.

    Combination Chemotherapy

    • A mixture of drugs and radiation, combination chemotherapy is designed to throw as many drugs as possible at the cancer to prevent the risk of the cancer gaining a resistance to one specific drug.

    Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy

    • Used as a preoperative treatment, neoadjuvant chemotherapy is designed to shrink the cancerous tumors. This allows for therapy to be less destructive after the initial operation.

    Adjuvant Chemotherapy

    • A postoperative procedure, adjuvant chemotherapy is used to prevent a recurrence. The radiation destroys the spreading cancer cells greatly reducing the cancer's resistance.

    Pallative Chemotherapy

    • Pallative chemotherapy is used when there is no hope for treating the cancer. Its purpose is to decrease the amount of tumors to increase life expectancy.
