Liver Treatment With Injections

Injections into the liver can be an effective treatment for several types of liver problems, including hydatid cysts and, more commonly, liver cancer.

  1. Treatment of Liver Cancer

    • Patients suffering from liver cancer who are either unwilling or unable to undergo surgery may be treated with injections of 100% pure ethanol, a substance which is highly toxic to liver tumors.

    Procedure

    • During the procedure, the surgeon uses a thin needle to inject the ethanol into the center of the cancer. The alcohol dehydrates the cancer cells, causing them to collapse and die. Multiple treatments may be necessary.

    Side Effects

    • Patients may experience temporary adverse side effects, including fever, if the ethanol leaks from the liver into other parts of the body.

    Treatment of Live Cysts

    • A team of doctors also recently discovered that injections of hypertonic saline may be helpful in the treatment of hydatid liver cysts.

    Treatmend of Fatty Liver

    • Scientists are continuing to study the effectiveness of treating liver disease through various injections. A recent article published in the Journal of Dairy Science suggests that injections of glucagon may be useful in treating fatty liver in cows, which may pave the way for similar treatment in humans
