Localized Lower Right Abdominal Pain

Lower right abdominal pain may occur as the result of many different chronic or acute conditions. Severe pain can even indicate life-threatening conditions that require emergency medical conditions.

  1. Identification

    • Identifying the cause of abdominal pain may be a challenge. Tests and blood work may be required if pain is severe and prolonged.

    Chronic Conditions

    • Chronic conditions such as endometriosis, diverticulitis and cancer may cause lower right-sided abdominal pain.

    Infections and Stones

    • Infections that lead to gallbladder inflammation or kidney infections may cause severe pain on the lower right side of the abdomen. Kidney stones may also cause severe pain.

    Acute Conditions

    • Appendicitis, inguinal hernia, ovarian cysts, ectopic pregnancy or intestinal obstruction is likely to cause severe lower right-sided abdominal pain. The stomach flu may also cause pain.

    Treatment

    • Consult a physician if pain is excruciating or if lasts more than a few days. To alleviate pain at home, try taking a a bath in warm water and resting as much as possible.
