How to Test a Person for Salmonella Enteritidis

Salmonella enteritidis is a type of bacteria associated with eating contaminated egg products that contain the bacteria. When you become infected with S. enteritidis, you can suffer from abdominal cramping, diarrhea and fever. Though the food industry goes to great lengths to prevent outbreaks of S. enteritidis in egg products, infections among consumers can still occur. If you believe that you have been infected with S. enteritidis, you can visit your physician and undergo testing.

Instructions

  1. Tests

    • 1

Discuss with your physician when your symptoms began, and tell him about food products you have recently ingested. This will help your physician determine if your illness was caused by ingesting contaminated foods.

    • 2

Give your physician a stool sample. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, identifying Salmonella is done by obtaining a sample of your stool.

    • 3

If you continue to have symptoms after a few days, give your physician blood samples. This will determine if any Salmonella bacterium has entered into your bloodstream.

    • 4

Take antibiotics as prescribed by your physician to help clear out a Salmonella infection. Don't stop antibiotic treatments, as this can result in some bacteria surviving.

    • 5

After you have finished your antibiotic treatments, return to your physician for a follow-up visit. Provide him with another stool sample to verify that your body has been rid of the bacterium.
