Alcohol & Drug Doctor Vs. Counselor
-
Role of General Practitioner
-
Doctors, although important in treatment, typically do not play a huge role with them. They do, however, play a critical role in treatment centers that offer the drug suboxone, which is used to treat opioid addictions. (See Reference 1.)
Role of Psychiatrist
-
Psychiatrists also have a role in drug treatment, especially in dual diagnosis, where patients are mentally ill and addicted to drugs or alcohol. Many patients are given anti-depressants, as they help a patient with the agitation, insomnia and other symptoms that the road to recovery creates. (See Reference 2.)
Counselor
-
Drug counselors interact with clients on a daily basis and help to teach them to think differently about their lives and ultimately, help them transition to a sober life. (See Reference 3.)
Relationship
-
Counselors document all behavior and progress with the client's permission and may consult with a physician to determine if medication is needed.
