Alcohol & Drug Doctor Vs. Counselor

Alcohol and drug treatment, a difficult and stressful practice, relies upon counselors and doctors in order to provide clients with the utmost care. The roles they play within treatment centers are essential if clients are to finish the program and live life in recovery.
  1. Role of General Practitioner

    • Doctors, although important in treatment, typically do not play a huge role with them. They do, however, play a critical role in treatment centers that offer the drug suboxone, which is used to treat opioid addictions. (See Reference 1.)

    Role of Psychiatrist

    • Psychiatrists also have a role in drug treatment, especially in dual diagnosis, where patients are mentally ill and addicted to drugs or alcohol. Many patients are given anti-depressants, as they help a patient with the agitation, insomnia and other symptoms that the road to recovery creates. (See Reference 2.)

    Counselor

    • Drug counselors interact with clients on a daily basis and help to teach them to think differently about their lives and ultimately, help them transition to a sober life. (See Reference 3.)

    Relationship

    • Counselors document all behavior and progress with the client's permission and may consult with a physician to determine if medication is needed.

    Tips

    • If you or someone you know is truly ready to begin steps to leading a sober life, this groups of professionals will work together to help.
