Non-Traditional Alcohol & Drug Treatment Programs
Non-traditional medicine has become a popular alternative for treating a variety of ailments and disorders, including drug and alcohol addiction. Although different from the structured 12-step programs, non-traditional rehabilitation methods have been successful in treating addiction.-
Prescriptions
-
The use of medication to calm symptoms of withdrawal in drug and alcohol addicts has been practiced for some time; however, new prescription medications are marketed to reduce cravings for addictive substances. Reduction in an addict's desire to use can correct a cycle of abuse without abstinence. Practicing moderation with the help of medicine allows addicts the opportunity to regain control of their lives.
Eastern Medicine
-
Eastern medicine centers on restoration of the body's harmony and balance, and drug and alcohol treatment programs of this nature focus on the mental, physical and spiritual aspects of life. Non-traditional holistic programs include detoxification by acupuncture, yoga meditation and nutritional analysis, and massage and spa relaxation treatments are sometimes used.
Hypnotherapy
-
Hypnotists use hypnotherapy to alter an addict's mental state, changing his subconscious feelings toward alcohol or drugs. This method has been proven to work, but it requires full commitment to quit from the patient. Hypnotherapy has also been shown to reduce pain and can be used to treat withdrawal symptoms.
Collaborative Rehabilitation
-
Collaborative treatment programs allow an addict to make decisions about her recovery. Several facilities have found success with the cooperative method as opposed to total structure and control over the patient, and incorporating the drug or alcohol abuser into her treatment can increase her motivation and self-confidence.
Alternative Therapies
-
Other non-traditional rehabilitation centers focus on alternative methods of therapy, including exercise, art therapy or animal therapy.
