Percentage of Drug Rehab Relapses

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), in 2006, there were almost 1.8 million admissions to drug treatment facilities requiring drug and alcohol treatment. In spite of drug treatment, many drug abusers and addicts suffer relapses.
  1. Success Probability

    • Drug addiction can be successfully treated. According to NIDA, progression in drug abuse treatment has helped individuals to lead drug-free lives.

    Relapse Rates

    • According to NIDA, 40 to 60 percent of drug-addicted patients suffer a relapse.

    Comparison

    • As with diabetes, hypertension, and asthma, drug addiction is a chronic illness. Hypertension and asthma have higher relapse rates---50 to 70 percent---than drug addiction while asthma has a 30 to 50 percent relapse rate.

    Rehab Treatment

    • A combination of medication---to treat withdrawal symptoms---and therapy---to address the root of the addiction---is the most effective method of treating drug addiction.

    Prevention

    • According to NIDA, prevention is the best strategy to avoiding drug addiction. When substance abuse programs are properly developed in schools, drug abuse is reduced. From 2001 to 2007, teen illicit drug use decreased by 24 percent.
