About Xanax Addiction
-
Purpose
-
Generally Xanax is prescribed to treat anxiety disorders. Symptoms of anxiety disorders include unrealistic worry and fear.
Addiction Likelihood
-
When Xanax is consumed over lengthy periods, addiction can occur. With addiction comes tolerance---the individual needs more of the drug to achieve the initial effect.
Withdrawal
-
Xanax addiction causes an emotional and physical dependence on the drug. The addict undergoes withdrawal symptoms if he suddenly stops or reduces his use. He should see a physician so his dosage can be tapered appropriately. Withdrawal symptoms include sweating, anxiety, fatigue, nausea and vomiting.
Detoxification
-
Detoxification involves cleansing the body of the drug on which it has become dependent. Medication is sometimes given to help wean the addict off drugs.
Treatment
-
Medications are mainly useful only in alleviating withdrawal symptoms---they do not address the cause of the addiction. Cognitive-behavioral therapy can get to the root of the issue and teach the addict how to change negative thoughts and behaviors.
