Alcohol and Circulation Problems

Alcohol is a contributing factor for many of life's ills, such as car accidents and liver disease. Alcohol can also be a contributing factor to circulation problems like high blood pressure and stroke. Alcohol abuse can increase chances of these conditions. At the same time, drinking alcohol in moderation can help prevent such circulation problems.
  1. Alcohol in Moderation

    • According to the National Stroke Association, drinking in moderation means having no more than two alcoholic beverages a day. Consuming more than this can triple your chances of having a stroke.

    Effects

    • A moderate amount of alcohol dilates the blood vessels, which allows the heart to do its job more easily. Consuming more than two alcoholic drinks forces the heart to work harder, which makes you vulnerable to circulation problems.

    High Blood Pressure

    • Drinking alcohol in excess is a risk factor for high blood pressure. High blood pressure is the leading cause of stroke.

    Red Wine

    • A study done at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre found red wine consumed in moderation to be especially helpful in preventing heart disease. European countries, where red wine is commonly consumed, have lower rates of heart disease.

    Considerations

    • Alcohol can interfere with medications, including those you may take for circulation problems. Talk to your doctor about alcohol consumption and its effect on your medications.
