How to Keep From Relapsing After Alcohol & Drug Rehab

Keep from relapsing after starting recovery from alcohol and drugs by replacing your old behaviors with new ones. Make new friends and stay away from the ones using and the places you used in. Join groups with others facing the same struggles and tell someone before relapsing in hopes of stopping with their support.

  1. Keeping Clean and Sober

    • 1

Stop going to the places that you did when you were using drugs and alcohol. This will just trigger you into wanting to pick up where you left off. Find other outlets for your spare time, such as sports, hobbies, crafts or even a second job.

    • 2

Let go of the friends that are still using the substances. It will be just a matter of time before you join them if you are still hanging around with them. This can be hard, but you will need to make new friends. Meet new friends through AA meetings, clubs or take a class at a local college.

    • 3

Attend AA or NA meetings as often as you can, especially in the beginning of your sobriety. It will help for you to see that you are not alone, plus the people there will share their tips on how they stay clean and sober.

    • 4

Go to individual counseling sessions if you need the extra support. There are many reasons that people self medicate and a counselor can help you sort through them. By finding out the root of your addiction you empower yourself with the knowledge and know-how to keep you sober.

    • 5

Tell someone you are feeling desperate and are getting ready to relapse before you do. Call your AA sponsor, a close friend or a relative who can give you the support to help you keep away for just another day until you are feeling stronger. Your support person should be non-judgmental and not put blame on you for having these feelings.

    • 6

Keep a journal of your thoughts and write down when you are feeling vulnerable to alcohol and drugs cravings. This will help you understand your triggers and patterns of drug use. Knowledge is power, and understanding what motivates you can help you when trying to stay away from old habits.
