Steps to Help Overcome Drug Dependence

Overcoming drug addiction can be overwhelming and painfully difficult for some. Many researchers have sought to find the best methods, plans and steps to use. While people use varying methods to overcome their addiction, some the steps towards rehabilitation are universal.
  1. Recognition of Addiction

    • The first and most important step in fighting your addiction is recognizing its presence. No one will quit using a drug if they do not feel they are addicted to that drug. Many programs, such as the 12-Step program originally devised by Alcoholic's Anonymous, suggest that users must admit that they have an uncontrollable problem. Once you have recognized the problem, you will be able to learn more about it, including how to end the addiction. Through recognition of your addiction you will also be able to better understand your own behaviors and relationship to that substance, thus enhancing your ability to quit.

    Change Your Life

    • Many rehabilitation programs stress the importance of changing your daily routine in order to limit the amount of temptation you face when attempting to quit. An important step would be to tell your friends about your goal to quit, and avoid your personal triggers. This step is really twofold. Not only are limiting your temptations, but you are also creating a new image for yourself and among your friends. If you begin doing many things differently, people will start to see you differently. You will also begin to see yourself in a different light, helping you build the courage and strength to continue the fight with your addiction.

    Seek Medical Help

    • Once you have recognized your problem and begin to make the needed changes in your life, it is important to seek out medical help. No matter the severity of your addiction, doctors are equipped with the information and medication you may require for successful rehabilitation. Once you've met with your doctor you can look over possible recovery methods and choose a plan that is best for you. This step also legitimizes your effort to quit as it is evidence that you recognize your problem and you are taking serious actions to halt drug dependence. Some of the options your doctor might go over with you are prescription medications, counseling and/or admittance to a rehabilitation hospital.
