Types of Designer Drugs

Designer drugs are defined as drugs made from pre-existing ones to create a new one. Designer drugs have become more prevalent as of late and knowing the different types is important.
  1. Stimulant Designer Drugs, Ecstacy

    • "Ecstasy" or MDMA is derived from amphetamine and is both a stimulant and a hallucinogenic. The drug is popular at night clubs and can cause potentially lethal side effects.

    The Stimulant Crystal Methamphetamine

    • Crystal methamphetamine is made from legal substances, classifying it as a designer drug. This powerful central nervous stimulant is now the most prevalent designer drug.

    Central Nervous System Depressant, GHB

    • Club Drugs Information reports that GHB, or Gamma Hydroxybutyrate: "exhibits different properties at varying dosages. In moderate doses, it acts euphorically, producing effects similar to alcohol. In larger doses, it acts as a potent sedative, often resulting in unconsciousness.

    Central Nervous System Depressant, Ketamine

    • Ketamine or "Special K," is a drug used on animals. This potent compound causes such intense highs in its users that many report "out of body" experiences.

    Hallucinogenics

    • LSD, or "acid" is one of the oldest designer drugs and creates an intoxicating high that lasts as long as eight hours.

    Prevention/Solution

    • The best prevention for designer drug abuse is to never try them at all. Solutions for their abuse are available nationwide.
