1
Get a health check up. Only those who are in great health should attempt an at-home detox. Detoxing from alcohol can be unpredictable, and can, in some cases, temporarily make certain disorders more dangerous to your health. This is especially true for those who suffer from seizures or have a high risk for stroke.

2
Understand the time commitment. Detoxing from alcohol can take anywhere from four to seven days. During this time, you will experience a host of different symptoms that can be overwhelming. Be sure to clear your schedule completely for at least a week before attempting a detox treatment.

3
Understand the side effects. Everyone reacts differently to an alcohol detox, depending on how long you have been addicted, your body chemistry, as well as your tolerance level. Side effects of alcohol detox may include: sweating, shaking, headache, confusion, anxiety, agitation and digestive issues such as diarrhea and vomiting.

4
Hire a professional. Your at-home detox needs to be supervised by a medical professional. It should not be just a friend, although friends are helpful to get through the process. Alcohol detox is unpredictable and can result in serious medical issues if not done correctly. Talk to your local drug rehabilitation center for contacts to professionals that offer at-home detox services.

5
Provide a secure and comfortable room. You are going to be inside for awhile during your detox. Stock your room with things to keep you occupied as well as comfortable accommodations for sleeping. A connected bathroom is a definite advantage. Keep anything that may be breakable, or that could harm you, in another room. Put a bowl or container by your bedside in case you are unable to make it to the bathroom to vomit.
