Hospital Alcohol Treatment

Treatment for alcoholism can be found at numerous rehab facilities across the world; some major hospitals have also opened their doors to the world of alcohol treatment. Hospital alcohol treatment is conducted in the same way as at rehabilitation centers, only in a more accessible setting. Hospital alcohol treatment is done at many hospitals that are not within close vicinity of a rehabilitation center; other hospitals without alcohol treatment services may refer the alcoholic to a rehab center.
  1. Treatment

    • Doctors, nurses and experts at alcohol addiction centers will all work together to determine a course of treatment best suited for the alcoholic. The team will continue to periodically check the progress of the recovering alcoholic to determine any changes that need to be done in the treatment course. Many hospitals and rehab centers are equipped to also treat dual dependencies and any diagnosis associated with the addiction.

    Specifications

    • Rehabilitation is available for alcohol addicts of all ages at a hospital alcohol treatment location. Treatment is even available for persons under drinking age and minors seeking care. In order to receive treatment, the alcoholic must have a diagnosis of alcoholism and be medically and mentally stable and willing to accept treatment. Alcohol rehabilitation is often unsuccessful when pushed upon the unwilling.

    Programs

    • Programs of treatment are dependent upon the age of the recovering alcoholic as well as other dependencies, diagnoses and the extent of dependencies. Examples of hospital alcohol treatment services include 12-step and 30-day recovery programs and support group systems. The staff at the hospital or rehabilitation center will also decide upon the program for recovery.

    Length

    • Because of the length of time necessary for rehabilitation from an addiction, there are not many hospitals that offer alcohol treatment services. Hospitals that offer this program are typically large hospitals with numerous departments. An alcohol rehabilitation program will extend approximately 30 days; so in order for a hospital to offer an alcohol treatment service they must have the room to accommodate an inpatient for 30 days or more.

    Preparation

    • Because alcohol rehabilitation is an inpatient treatment procedure, the patient will need to prepare to be away from home for a couple of weeks or up to 30 days or more. They will need to bring clothing and other accessories for staying at the facility or hospital. Get your loved one or yourself ready for the rehabilitation process by becoming familiar with transporting to the hospital or facility and learning the layout of the center's campus. This will make the transition easier.

    Considerations

    • Convincing a loved of their need to stop their alcoholism addiction, or admitting to yourself that you have a problem and need help may be a struggle.
