Places to Get Help From Drugs
Each year, more than 40 million serious injuries or accidents are a result of drug abuse, according to the National Institutes of Healthy. Every day people are abusing drugs such as cocaine, ecstasy and marijuana. But many people also abuse, and become addicted to, drugs that they believe to be harmless, like cough suppressants and prescription pain medication. When it's time to get help, here are some options.-
Narcotics Anonymous
-
Narcotics Anonymous is a 12-step program that helps drug addicts realize that they have become powerless over drugs. The purpose of this type of program is to give people tools for living without substances along with providing a supportive community of people with similar issues.
Detoxification
-
Depending on the severity of a person's addiction, a sudden withdrawal from using drugs could have severe side effects like seizures and major depression. A safe medical detox with supervision will help the person withdraw from drugs with fewer side effects.
Inpatient Rehab
-
Residential rehab provides a safe living situation for a person to withdraw and begin recovering from addiction by offering counseling, group therapy and drug education seminars. Inpatient rehab can last anywhere from seven days to three months.
Outpatient Rehab
-
Outpatient rehab is similar to residential treatment. Addicts will attend group therapy meetings and receive counseling. They will also be part of a recovering, supportive community.
Drug Counseling
-
A licensed substance abuse counselor is specifically trained to help drug abusers understand why they use drugs and how they can live without taking substances. In addition to providing private sessions, a counselor will help the patient find additional support for her recovery in 12-step programs or group therapy, for instance.
