Alcoholism is a disease that affects not only the afflicted person, but everyone around them. Those with alcoholism have a difficult time maintaining interpersonal relationships and performing their daily activities. They may even find that their only thoughts are on alcohol.
  1. Physical Dependence

    • Physical dependence occurs when the individual experiences withdrawal symptoms when kept away from alcohol. They may feel physically sick, have an upset stomach or even experience nervous shakes.

    Psychological Dependence

    • Psychological dependence is a type of dependence where the alcoholic continues drinking because of the way the alcohol makes them feel. They often think that their good feelings will disappear if they stop drinking.

    Body

    • Alcoholism causes problems in the body such as irritation of the intestinal tract. They may experience bleeding and vomiting or feel irritation in their esophagus.

    Prevalence

    • According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, nearly 14 million people living in the United States have a problem with alcohol. This includes alcoholics and people who drink more than average. Men are more likely to become an alcoholic than women.

    Alcoholics Anonymous

    • Alcoholics Anonymous or AA is the most popular type of alcohol rehabilitation. Members complete 12 steps that includes ideas such as making amends for past misdeeds and accepting a higher power.

    Symptoms

    • Symptoms or signs of alcoholism include the inability to function without a drink, the need to drink every day and hiding alcohol around the house. The individual may also grow angry or upset when alcohol isn't around.
