Drug Addiction Side Effects

There are a slew of side effects from drug addiction that vary according to the drug being abused, the length of time the addict has been using the drug and the amounts being used. Drug addiction side effects are both physical and psychological and affect those who come into contact with the addict, including co-workers, family and friends.
  1. Isolation

    • One of the main side effects of drug addiction is the isolation the addict craves in order to spend time getting high. Addicts eventually cut off relationships from those not involved in the drug scene.

    Behavior

    • Behavior becomes erratic and out of character as a result of repeated drug abuse. People who were once shy may become overtly outgoing and those who were generally happy may exhibit signs of depression.

    Appearance

    • Recognizable side effects of drug abuse are seen in the appearance of drug users who do not bathe or keep themselves groomed. Opiate users may wear sunglasses indoors and long sleeves to hide needle track marks.

    Opiates

    • Physical side effects from opiate use, which includes heroin and morphine, are pin-sized pupils, slurred speech, lethargy and nodding off at all times.

    Stimulants

    • Stimulants such as methamphetamine and cocaine produce side effects that include heightened energy spurts, restlessness, increased blood pressure and weight loss.
