How to Stop Smoking Drugs

Smoking drugs might seem harmless when you start. It might seem as if you have things under control, but before you know it, the drugs can start to control you. Pretty soon, smoking drugs is no longer a choice. It's something you feel you have to do. When it starts impacting your life, you may realize that you need to stop smoking the drugs. Breaking an addiction is hard, so you need to have a plan and a reliable support system.

      List the specific reasons that you want to stop smoking drugs. When you're suffering from the impact of your addiction, it's easy to think of those reasons. Later, when you have the desire, you tend to forget them when you reach for the drugs. Having an objective list will help you remember in tough times.

      Ask family members and friends for help. If your employer has an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), you can also call and ask them for support. You will need assistance and support from those around you to successfully help you stop smoking drugs.

      Determine whether you might need to enter a formal treatment program, such as inpatient or outpatient treatment at a hospital. If you have tried to stop smoking drugs on your own before and have not been successful, you might need professional assistance.

      Join a 12-step program such as Narcotics Anonymous. Even if you don't enter formal professional treatment, the structure of 12-step meetings will give you the support needed to stop smoking drugs and maintain your abstinence.

      Break ties with people who might pull you back into smoking drugs. People who have an addiction usually surround themselves with other drug users. When you are trying to stop, being around those people can tempt you back into the addiction. Make new friends among your 12-step people and others who are not drug users.

      Don't cease your efforts just because you have a slip-up. Many drug smokers try to stop, but then give in to temptation. They smoke drugs once use it as an excuse to totally give up their efforts to stop. There is no reason to do this. 12-step programs advocate stopping one day at a time. If you slip up one day, that doesn't mean you have to continue smoking drugs on the next one.
