Detox Symptoms for Alcoholics

Alcohol detoxification, also known as detox, is a course of medical treatment that is used to direct the process of substance withdrawal in an alcoholic. Symptoms typically appear within the first 48 hours after the alcoholic has stopped ingesting alcohol. The severity of detox symptoms depends on how long the individual was addicted and how serious his addiction was. Medical professionals may prescribe medication to help ease detox symptoms.
  1. Nausea

    • One of the most common physical detox symptoms is persistent nausea that is accompanied by vomiting.

    Sensitivity to Stimuli

    • Individuals who are in alcohol detox also often experience sensitivity to stimuli for two to three days after they stop drinking. Light and sound are particularly offensive.

    Emotional Stress

    • Emotional symptoms, such as irritability, anxiety and unwarranted agitation are common symptoms.

    Hallucinations

    • Long-term alcoholics may experience hallucinations during detox, as well as elevated heart rate and blood pressure.

    Seizures

    • Severe cases of withdrawal may produce seizures.
