About Long-Term Drug Rehabilitation Centers

Long-term drug rehabilitation centers take people with substance abuse problems beyond basic detox and withdrawal assistance to new levels of responsibility they may not have had since they started using drugs. Clients of some long-term programs learn job skills and how to sustain relationships and re-establish connections with family members. They are guided through the stages of recovery to understand how they became drug addicts and how they can sustain long-term recovery. Long-term drug rehabilitation programs vary from 3 months to 3 years. Long-term drug treatment programs are widely available through sources such as the National Drug and Alcohol Abuse Hotline.
  1. Narconon

    • Based in Vista Bay, California, Narconon uses a detoxification process that utilizes sauna treatment, exercise and vitamins. With a cognitive therapy approach and holistic lifestyle training, counselors help clients realize their full potential for as long as the process takes an individual. Most patients at Narconon stay from 4 to 6 months. An upfront payment covers the entire program, which some insurance policies may partially cover. Rates are quoted to interested parties after an initial evaluation. Based on the teachings of L. Ron Hubbard, the program has been in operation since the early 1960s.

    Gatehouse

    • A program for young adults, ages 17 through 25, Gatehouse offers drug treatment programs that range from 6 months through high school graduation and early college if clients need longer treatment. With wooded campuses in Arizona and upstate New York, Gatehouse provides counseling based on 12-step recovery programs and classes so that students can maintain their education. Clients receive intense therapy, life skills training and long-term follow-up outpatient care.

    Burning Tree

    • For those who have had trouble with relapsing after shorter treatment stays, Burning Tree in Kaufman, Texas, offers a drug treatment program that lasts up to 12 months. The plan, which costs about $7,500 a month, includes a relapse prevention approach to recovery that teaches clients how to live once they leave the center. Patients are provided with a customized program that includes nutrition, neurofeedback therapy and an integrated family program. After they leave, reformed addicts receive lifetime aftercare and transition services.

    TROSA

    • Triangle Residential Option for Substance Abusers primarily serves homeless addicts in the Durham, North Carolina, compound. After withdrawal is complete, residents go through a series of programs that eventually lead to full-time work and re-entry into society. The organization's motto is "each one teach one," which encourages residents to stay as counselors once they've completed the program, which can last as long as 3 years. Therapy, peer counseling and 12-step programs complement the many in-house work projects the residents perform to pay their way.

    CMR Recovery Residence

    • Founded by the original members of Alcoholics Anonymous, CMR Recovery Residence provides intense drug rehabilitation at its Long Island, New York, wooded facility.
