How to Bounce Back From a Relapse

Bouncing back from a relapse can be difficult. You want to recognize what caused the relapse to help you get back on your recovery program as soon as possible. Overcome the negativity, shame, fear and guilt and take control of your life.

Instructions

    • 1

Reflect on your current relapse as a guide to what you should do differently. Focus on what you need to do to remain sober for the next 24 hours, even if you have to take it hour-by-hour.

    • 2

Reconstruct a thorough inventory of indicators that signal a relapse for you. These warning signs could be irrational thoughts, stress, overwhelming feelings and any other negative behaviors.

    • 3

Managing these warning signs by developing positive coping skills rather than subjecting yourself to the negative affects of relapse.

    • 4

Attend a number of 12-step meetings to reinforce your recovery.

    • 5

Get a list of numbers from people you can call for support when you feel a craving. Create a list of additional activities to deter those cravings.

    • 6

Write down an inventory of emotional triggers--people, places and things that you associate with your using.

    • 7

Stay in the company of positive people and avoid those stressful situations.
