1
Educate yourself on the substance your loved one is addicted to. It's important that you know everything about it--whether it's alcohol, cocaine or heroin--so that you know what to expect when she goes into rehab.
-
2
Contact a local substance abuse treatment center or your family doctor once you've figured out the cause and nature of your loved one's addiction.
-
3
Ask a lot of questions about what withdrawal and rehab will entail. Ask what role the family and friends can play to help the person succeed in kicking the habit.
-
4
Accept the fact that your loved one has a serious problem. Stop making excuses and covering for him. Living in denial will contribute to the problem. You're not doing him any good by turning a blind eye to his drug use.
-
5
Assure her that you love her and are there for her. But be firm in the fact that you cannot sit by any longer and allow her to destroy her life.
-
6
Attend treatment sessions with the person you love to support their process and heal yourself. Participate in group therapy sessions. Look for support groups for families in your predicament. It's important to learn how to be a contributing, supportive partner in the recovery from drug use.
