How to Use a Drug Addiction Workbook

You can find a number of different workbooks available to people who are addicted to drugs and want to stop. While writing about and looking at your drug addiction is a positive step toward recovery, sobriety is not a game and it usually takes more than just writing in a workbook to stay clean. Workbooks can, however, help people on drugs to clarify their feelings and behaviors.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the workbook in tandem with another program or a mentor who can answer questions as they arise. Often difficult feelings arise while writing and it is best to have someone ready to help you through them.

    • 2

Answer the questions in the workbook honestly. You will be wasting your time if you lie to yourself and those trying to help you.

    • 3

Hide your workbook in the trunk of your car or someplace else that only you have access to. Do this only if you are concerned about your spouse or other family members learning everything about your addiction.

    • 4

Carry a separate notebook while working in a workbook. While there are blank lines in the various workbooks in which to write your answers to the questions posed, often other important thoughts will come up while working on addiction and you will want another outlet to continue writing.

    • 5

Follow the instructions of your counselor. You may need to specific things if you are in treatment and required to use an addiction workbook.

    • 6

Purchase workbooks at meetings if you go to Narcotics Anonymous or another 12-step fellowship. Other addiction workbooks that promise relief just by buying a book are available online and in bookstores.
