Complete detoxification before starting any therapy. Most people who are dependent on alcohol have physical symptoms when they stop drinking. This is known as withdrawal, or detoxification. It can be life threatening and should not be done unsupervised. Medical detoxification programs can be found in most major hospitals and drug rehabilitation centers. Many of these programs will help you connect with follow-up care, including a referral to a substance abuse counselor.
