Drug abuse not only affects those who are addicted to drugs, but their families as well. According to MedlinePlus.com, drug abuse is responsible for approximately 40 million injuries or illnesses in the United States each year.

    • Marijuana, heroin and cocaine are commonly abused by Americans of all ages. Other drugs such as GHB, ecstacy and crystal meth are known as "club drugs" because they are often abused by young people at dance clubs and bars. Anabolic steroids are also drugs that are often abused by bodybuilders and athletes. One of the most commonly abused drugs by teenagers in America is the prescription drug Vicodin. Nearly one in 10 high school seniors used Vicodin for non-medical purposes in 2004, according to the National Institute On Drug Abuse.

    • According to the National Institute On Drug Abuse, approximately 50 percent to 80 percent of all child abuse cases investigated by child protective services are due to some degree of drug abuse on the part of the parents. Many people in America who abuse drugs, end up homeless and alone. According to The National Survey On Drug Use And Health, there are approximately 3.7 million people who are living in poverty and are in need of substance abuse treatment in the United States each year.

    • Drug addiction and abuse is a complex disease that often requires professional treatment. Physical symptoms and cravings often cause drug abusers to seek drugs, despite efforts to remain drug-free. According to the National Institute On Drug Abuse, treatment for drug abuse consists of behavioral therapy, medication and residential treatment. The criminal justice system is another means of treating drug addiction, as offenders who are incarcerated cannot obtain their drug of choice.
