How to Manage Alcohol Cravings

Alcohol cravings are a large part of the perpetuation of alcohol addiction, and must be managed effectively to control the disease of alcoholism. They can be caused by fluctuations in blood sugar or triggered by unpleasant feelings like boredom or anxiety.
  1. Distraction

    • Perhaps the most effective method of managing cravings for an addict is to distract themselves from the desire to drink, as well as the underlying feelings causing the craving. Changing the scenery, going for a walk, exercising, or mundane activities like cleaning and cooking can provide a distraction.

    Imagery

    • Using imagery to visualize an alcohol addiction or the negative effects of it are a good way to rationalize dangerous thoughts like cravings. The addict can imagine their addiction as a semi-truck coming to a stop, or can remember their lowest moment while addicted to alcohol.

    Relaxation

    • Many times cravings are triggered by feelings of frustration, anger or anxiety. Addicts can find comfort in relaxation techniques like meditation and yoga which help them get over their underlying feelings that trigger alcohol cravings.
