How to Drink in Moderation Rather Than Excess

Reducing the amount of alcohol you drink can be challenging, but you can do it. Drinking becomes a habit and breaking the habit tests your self-control. Although excessive intake of alcohol may contribute to health problems, drinking in moderation is fine for most people, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. NIAAA defines moderate drinking as no more than two drinks each day for men and one drink each day for women. Don't worry if you're not immediately successful at reducing the amount of alcohol you drink. Stay positive and keep trying.

Instructions

    • 1

List the reasons you want to drink in moderation. Once you identify the reasons you want to reduce your alcohol consumption, you can think about them when the urge strikes to drink one too many.

    • 2

Identify the number of drinks per day or per week you consider moderation. Keep these goals in mind when you're slightly buzzed and thinking about pouring another.

    • 3

List the times when you drink and evaluate whether alcohol is necessary during that time. Perhaps you usually have a glass of wine when cooking dinner, another while eating and yet another after dinner. Consider limiting yourself to one drink or not drinking at all.

    • 4

Try alternatives. For example, try a fruit spritzer made with fruit juice and seltzer water during dinner instead of your usual glass of wine.

    • 5

Drink slowly. If you savor every sip of your cocktail, it will last longer. This may help you reduce the total number of drinks you consume.

    • 6

Keep a drink diary. At the end of each day, write down the number of drinks you've consumed. Make sure you stay on track with the goals you set.
